In this post by BYPILLOW, we want to tell you about the Explanada de Alicante Promenade and the millions of pieces that make up its amazing mosaic. Get ready to learn about it in this article! 😉

Do you know the history of the Explanada de Alicante?

To learn about the history of the Explanada de Alicante Promenade, we have to go back to the 19th century. Due to busy maritime trade, the city needed a landmark space where Alicante residents could enjoy the sea and socialize. That’s when the idea of creating the Explanada de España, which later became the heart of the city, was born.

Built over the Mediterranean Sea, this architectural gem stretches for almost a kilometer and a half. But what really makes it special is its mosaic floors. Did you know that they are made up of more than 6 million tiles? That’s like a sea of colors under your feet!

However, the Explanada wasn’t always like this. Initially, it was just a dirt road. But in the 1950s, a major renovation took place that gave it the look we know today, with its elegant palm trees, wooden benches, and charming cafés.

The Mediterranean in a huge mosaic

The mosaic covering the floor of the Explanada de Alicante Promenade is a unique and emblematic work of art. This impressive design stretches for almost a kilometer and a half, becoming a distinctive feature of this iconic seafront walk.

The history of this mosaic dates back to the mid-20th century when a major remodeling of the Explanada was carried out. It was then decided to beautify the promenade with a unique design that reflected the essence and history of Alicante.

The person tasked with this ambitious project was the Spanish artist Juan Antonio Pascual. With his talent and creativity, Pascual designed a pattern that represented elements characteristic of the Alicante culture and landscape: from the waves of the sea to the city’s traditional symbols, each detail of the mosaic tells a story and evokes a sense of belonging and local pride.

The process of creating this mosaic was a challenge. The 6 million ceramic tiles we mentioned were carefully placed to create an impressive visual effect. Each tile was carefully selected to ensure the quality and durability of the mosaic, which has withstood the test of time and remains in excellent condition to this day.

In addition to its aesthetic function, the mosaic of the Explanada also has a symbolic meaning. It represents the union of tradition and modernity, as well as the welcoming spirit of the city of Alicante. It is a meeting point for residents and visitors, a place where unforgettable memories can be created while enjoying the beauty of the surroundings.
