José Carlos Losada

Matter and Memory

José Carlos Losada is a craftsman and specialist in traditional finishes, with a career built on the thoughtful use of lime and plaster: two materials essential to the architecture of Cádiz, thanks to their ability to breathe, reflect light, and stand the test of time. His work combines technical expertise, aesthetic sensibility, and a commitment to preserving traditional knowledge. It works closely with Gordillos Cal de Morón, a company that keeps alive an ancient method of lime production in kilns of Andalusian origin, built on a legacy of Roman technical expertise.

Artistic manifesto

Cladding a wall is also a way of reconnecting with the history of the place. Losada’s artisanal approach is rooted in listening to the building: each layer he applies extends the life of the space without imposing foreign forms. His language is free of ostentation; it consists solely of material, texture, and silence. Through carefully crafted combinations, he allows architecture to speak from its very essence. His work is also a form of cultural resistance: preserving what connects with the environment and what, even today, still makes sense.

José Carlos Losada's Project at BYPILLOW Casa Gades (Cádiz)

At BYPILLOW Casa Gades, Losada has covered the headboards in the bedrooms with a mixture of lime and plaster, a technique deeply rooted in the traditional architecture of the south. For this project, he used Paris plaster, chosen for its whiteness and its ability to capture the changing light of the surroundings. The result is understated yet warm, contemporary yet timeless. Each surface blends seamlessly with the building as if it had always been there, reinforcing the connection between the materials, the memories, and the place.
